Many families are switching to nontraditional education because of the various benefits it provides. These benefits include the flexibility that traveling families may need, personalization for children with unique interests, safety, and more.

However, this type of education is still new to many and changing in several ways, leading families to be skeptical or feel confused about which direction (whether in education or life) their children can go in as they get older.

One of the main points of concern for families is whether or not their child can get accepted into and succeed in college if they’re engaging in nontraditional education.

The simple answer is:

Yes

Just because a child is homeschooled, attending a virtual school, etc., that doesn’t mean that colleges won’t accept them.

In fact, there’s a study that shows that colleges are actively recruiting homeschoolers.

Why?

Homeschoolers, along with other nontraditional learners, provide unique perspectives because of their unique experiences, adding diversity to the college’s student population, which is the ultimate goal.

Colleges don’t look down upon students in nontraditional learning. Many of the admissions officers equally consider traditional students and nontraditional students and look at each of their applications based on their own background, opportunities, and experiences.

How Does The Process Work?

Since your child is not in a traditional school environment, the process/requirements for applying to colleges may look a little different. And that’s okay! This type of learning is unique, so it’s expected.

Here are a few tips to ensure that you are prepared for the process:

Make sure that you understand the admission requirements. Each university has different requirements and those requirements can vary depending on which type of education the child has received. This means you would need to fully understand what the requirements are in order to provide the necessary documentation and records. This will ensure that your child has a good chance of getting into that school.

Take college courses. This is great especially if your child is at the high school level, whether or not they’re in traditional learning. These college classes can be taken at your local or community college or even at an online university! This can add an advantage to your child’s application by showing their college readiness.

Most importantly, you and your family should build a support network. With nontraditional education, you may not have easy access to advisors, guidance counselors, and teachers to address concerns and questions about the process as those in a traditional brick-and-mortar would.

And that’s okay! You can still find a network in your community, family members, co-workers, neighbors, professionals, and even other families engaging in nontraditional learning. You can also contact us; we provide resource connections and advising to help make the nontraditional education process easier.

Why Virtual Schooling Is A Great Option for Your Child’s Education
benefits of virtual schooling, why is virtual schooling beneficial, virtual school for kids

At Strike Hope, we’re helping children across the nation pursue a nontraditional education. We provide financial assistance for Chromebooks, tuition, tutoring and teaching, and more. Help us make an impact on our nation’s future by visiting THIS LINK.

Choosing the right form of education for your child is one of the most important (and probably one of the most challenging) decisions that any parent or guardian will have to make. There are so many options to choose from, including brick-and-mortar public schools, charter schools, Catholic schools, and more.

On top of those options, there are now even more with nontraditional education, such as homeschooling, virtual schooling, unschooling, and deschooling. This makes the decision even harder.

Before we get into this blog, we want to stress that whatever option you choose, make sure that it works for you and your family’s situation. We’re firm believers in nontraditional education, but we also understand that this may not be for everyone.

While we’re on the topic of nontraditional education, let’s take a look at the benefits of virtual schooling:

Flexibility

One of the main reasons that many families switch to virtual schooling is because it allows for greater flexibility. There are some families that move around for job-related reasons or their child may participate in rigorous extra-curricular activities. Another reason may be that the family lives in a secluded area and the nearest school is too far to travel to.

Virtual schooling allows children to take their education anywhere they go without having to stress about getting to a physical classroom. All you’d need is a laptop (which we can provide)!

Furthermore, many virtual schools allow families to choose what times work best for their children to learn. Since everyday may look extremely different for them, the child may not be able to learn in a fixed period of time. This means that one day, they may need to take courses during the day and the next they may need to take courses at night.

Virtual schooling tends to accommodate each student’s schedule and allows them to pick up right where they left off.

Personalization

Personalization is another great benefit of virtual schooling. Many virtual schools offer a wider selection of courses, many that aren’t offered in a traditional brick-and-mortar. These may include several electives, like coding, languages, or career-readiness courses in different disciplines.

Many children have interests in subjects that aren’t widely available in traditional schools, which can limit their learning experience. Virtual schooling allows students to explore their interests while getting a well-rounded education.

Personalization increases student engagement and motivation because they’ll start looking forward to what they’re learning. They’ll also be more likely to continue their education and learning beyond high school and even college.

It’s important to understand that while there are several benefits to virtual schooling, it may not be for everyone. We encourage you to try it out, but ultimately you should choose the option that works best for you and your family. Remember: each family’s situation and needs are unique.

Whether virtual schooling or engaging in any other type of nontraditional education, Strike Hope is here to help!

Even after the pandemic, many families are facing financial hardship. With increasing layoffs and a higher cost of living, more and more families have to rely on one income or a significantly reduced salary.

While many families understand the benefits of homeschooling, they also understand that there are several costs involved. Many of these costs include curricula, supplies, desks and chairs, tutoring and teaching (yes, homeschoolers can have tutors too!), field trips, and the list goes on and on.

This can seem a little daunting, but there are several ways to provide a well-rounded homeschool experience for your child without going overboard on expenses. Let’s take a look:

Buy Used

Buying used or secondhand should not be frowned upon and, in fact, can save you a lot of money and headache!

There are many online marketplaces, like eBay and Amazon, where you can buy or rent used books that are still in good condition. So, you don’t have to worry about paying full price like when you’re buying new, especially if you’re not going to reuse the material in the future.

Also, try to ask friends and family for whatever books and supplies that they may have; you never know what hidden gems you may find that you can turn into a lesson!

Don’t Forget About The Library

Do you live near a local library? Use that to your advantage!

If you have a library card, you can take out books and use their computers. Fun fact: some libraries even provide curriculum for children! There are a lot of free and affordable materials that can help support your child’s learning.

Many libraries also offer free events. These range from arts and crafts classes to puppet shows to networking events. So, try keeping up to date with all of your library’s upcoming events.

Furthermore, the library is a great (and free!) field trip. So, that kills two birds with one stone!

Lastly, don’t be afraid to reach out for help.

We provide financial assistance for Chromebooks, tuition, teaching and tutoring, and advising and resource connections. We work to ensure that children across the country experience the full benefits of nontraditional education without their families having to break the bank.

If you meet these national poverty guidelines, don’t hesitate to fill out our application of assistance.

The choices you make regarding your child’s education are extremely important, not just for learning and development, but also for their future. With that in mind, the process can be an extremely intimidating one.

After the introduction and increasing popularity of nontraditional education, there are so many options to choose from, making it seem as though there may be too many options to choose from.

However, not every option will be the right fit for your child or your family situation. So, we’re here to discuss a couple of things to keep in mind when looking at two broader forms of education: nontraditional education and traditional education.

Traditional Education

Traditional education (such as public school, Catholic schools, etc.) typically involves the brick-and-mortar school. Students learn in classrooms with a teacher and start and end their education at certain times. They attend classes for a fixed duration and take courses on specific subjects and topics according to state requirements.

There are many benefits to this type of education, including feeling of community, ability to work in groups (which can improve leadership skills and creativity), and stability and routine.

Often, stiff schedules and high costs can steer families toward the next form of education that we’ll discuss: nontraditional education.

Nontraditional Education

Nontraditional education is one that takes place outside of the classroom. It typically serves students who have learning needs and interests that are not properly addressed in a brick-and-mortar. Nontraditional education includes homeschooling, unschooling, virtual schooling, deschooling, and more.

Just like a traditional one, nontraditional education has a variety of benefits including flexibility, customized learning experiences, and more opportunities to learn real world skills.

Additionally, if a family moves around a lot or the child participates in a rigorous extracurricular, a nontraditional education may be the best educational route for that family.

All in all, both types of education have their benefits and their challenges. So, in determining which type of education is better for your child, it’s important to look at your unique family situation. That’ll give you the answer.

For example, if your family moves around a lot because the breadwinner’s job requires it, then a nontraditional education would be more suitable for the child. However, if the family has a lifestyle where they’d stay in one setting for an extended period of time, then a traditional education may work for the child’s development.

What we’re saying is that it’s up to you and your family’s situation and needs

At Strike Hope, we’re here to help you financially if you go the nontraditional route. We offer Chromebooks, tuition assistance, and more for families who are in need of assistance. Support our cause and learn more about our mission HERE

Many families across the nation are engaging in nontraditional education. And today we’re going to specifically discuss one of the more popular types: homeschooling.

Homeschooling is not a new fad or ‘trend’; it’s been around since the 17th century but became increasingly popular (and more accepted) in the 1970s and again during and after the pandemic.

Even though schools are going back to in-person learning, many families are still opting to homeschool their children. With that in mind, you may be wondering: are there actually any benefits to homeschooling?

Indeed there are! Let’s take a look:

What is Homeschooling?

Homeschooling is also known as ‘home education’. It’s an educational model where parents teach their children at home instead of sending them to a traditional brick-and-mortar school. Essentially, the parent takes control over organizing their child’s learning.

While this may seem as though the parent is doing all of the teaching, parents can also choose to add a combination of tutors and other parents into their child’s learning.

We help provide financial assistance for tutoring and teaching! Learn more and donate HERE

‘Home’ may be in the word, but homeschooling doesn’t always have to take place there. More times than not, lessons can often take place outside of the home, such as at museums, zoos, parks, and more!

So, What Are The Benefits of Homeschooling?

There are several reasons why a parent may decide to homeschool their children.

One reason, as already mentioned above, is that parents have more control over what their child learns. Some children have special needs, while others may have interests that don’t align with a traditional education.

Another benefit is flexibility. Parents are able to set times as to when their child learns, allowing for their education to fit into their daily schedule, especially if the schedule is an extremely busy one. Not only that, but students are also not confined to just one area! Learning can take place anywhere, whether inside or outside of the home.

Homeschooling also encourages autonomy and independence. Children learn how to make their own decisions, solve issues, and even work independently. Furthermore, in having a flexible schedule, children also have to make sure that they set certain times to get their work done, improving on their planning skills.

While homeschooling is a great form of nontraditional education, it may not be for everyone. Luckily, there are other types that can be suitable for you and your family, such as unschooling or virtual schooling! It’s important for your family to engage in what works best for them.

And we’re here to financially help every step of the way! We offer financial assistance for Chromebooks, teaching and tutoring, tuition, and more. The pandemic has drastically changed many of our ways of living, including health, lifestyle, family dynamics, and even education. Speaking of education, since the pandemic, the participation in nontraditional education has steadily increased.

In fall 2020, the rate at which U.S. households that homeschool at least one school-aged child jumped from 4.5% to 7.3%. Across 10 states alone, virtual school enrollment rose 170% of its pre-pandemic level.

In understanding that there is an increase in participation in nontraditional education, we strive to use our donations to help families facing financial hardship pursue a nontraditional education. But that leaves one question: What exactly do our donations do? Let’s take a look:

Chromebooks

As nontraditional education evolves and becomes more popular, the need for technology increases. Whether for research, online textbooks, or even attending class, students, especially nontraditional students, need laptops more than ever before.

If he or she is attending a virtual school, it’s critical that students have the technology they need in order to engage with their teachers, complete their assignments, and more. Without it, they won’t be able to succeed in their education.

However, laptops can be expensive for some families, especially if one family member has lost a job, is receiving less pay, etc. So, at Strike Hope, we use our donations to purchase Chromebooks. We provide these Chromebooks for students pursuing a nontraditional education free of charge.

Teaching and Tutoring

Tutoring is just as important in nontraditional education as it is with traditional education. Believe it or not, tutoring has various benefits for those engaging in a nontraditional education. These benefits include providing motivation, helping students better understand course materials, and aiding in administrative work and lesson planning

Ultimately, a tutor can free up more of your time so that you can focus on other things, such as work and maintaining the household. And your child is getting the assistance that he or she needs. However, as sessions add up, so do costs. This is why at Strike Hope, we use our donations to help families get the teaching and tutoring they need for their child. We ensure that they don’t worry about their child falling behind.

Tuition Assistance

Yes, some forms of nontraditional education, such as virtual schooling, may require tuition!

Tuition can range anywhere from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars. With inflation and increasing bills, such as rent and groceries, sometimes families facing financial hardship may not be able to meet their tuition payments.

And that’s why we’re here to help.

At Strike Hope, we believe that no family should have to choose between their current bills and their child’s education. Part of our donations also go towards helping pay for tuition for nontraditional education.

We also provide financial assistance with advising and resource connections, which is especially important for high schoolers who are receiving a nontraditional education and are looking to pursue a higher degree. We understand that money is an extremely sensitive topic, and we make it our mission to work with families across the nation so that they don’t have to stress about their child’s education.

Can You Hire A Tutor For Nontraditional Education?

At Strike Hope, we’re helping children across the nation pursue a nontraditional education. We provide financial assistance for Chromebooks, tuition, tutoring and teaching, and more. Support our cause and help children nationwide by visiting THIS LINK

Often, hiring a tutor can be frowned upon. Either it’s an additional (and sometimes unwanted) expense or it means that your children’s teachers aren’t doing their job properly. However, hiring a tutor can help enhance your child’s overall experience.

Doing so can help your child master the basics of difficult subjects and reinforce what they’re being taught. And for the most part, tutors are often seen in traditional education.

But at Strike Hope, we’re all about nontraditional education. So, that brings up an important question:

Can You Hire A Tutor For Nontraditional Education?

In short, yes! Tutoring is not just for those pursuing a traditional education.

Let’s face it, parents and guardians can be busy. With working full-time or part-time jobs, taking care of multiple children, maintaining their home, and more, they may not have the time to fully devote themselves to educating their child or children without help.

Some parents may also be transitioning from a traditional education to a nontraditional one and have difficulty with their teaching style because they’re new at it.

Whatever the reason may be, hiring a tutor for nontraditional education (such as homeschooling, virtual schooling, etc.) is a great idea!

Benefits of Hiring A Tutor

There are several benefits for hiring a tutor.

One of them being that they help provide motivation. When learning at home, it can sometimes be difficult for your child to constantly stay motivated to learn; in fact, it’s expected. Other times, your child may become distracted or stuck. A tutor is experienced to help them work through whatever roadblocks they may have.

A tutor can also help with administrative work. They can help create a curriculum and a lesson plan, organize materials, as well as provide support and expertise in certain subject areas. This is a great benefit for parents or guardians that are new to nontraditional education and may need a little guidance on the path.

With great support, it can also come with a big cost.

While no parent wants to put a price tag on their child’s education, it is important to be aware that these expenses do add up. And families facing financial hardship may have to choose between a tutor for their child or their next few meals.

However, at Strike Hope, we believe that parents shouldn’t have to choose and should be able to have both. This is why we’re accepting applications for assistance for tutoring as well as Chromebooks, tuition assistance, and more.

If you’re looking for help and if your family’s income is at or below these national poverty guidelines, and you are engaging in nontraditional learning, you can fill out an application for assistance HERE

Common Challenges of Families Pursuing a Nontraditional Education

There are many benefits to nontraditional education, such as flexibility, personalization, and safety, but there are also many challenges that come along with it. This is why our mission at Strike Hope is extremely important. We work to reduce the financial stresses and challenges that many of these families face so that they can focus on what’s most important: their child’s education.

Let’s take a look at a few of the challenges of nontraditional education and how we work to address them:

Lack of Direction

Certain types of nontraditional education, such as homeschooling or unschooling, can be great educational methods, but can also be prone to much variability. If the type of education doesn’t follow a curriculum or certain standards, parents may find it hard to know what to teach.

Parents may find it stressful to know what to do because there may be too many options, and they don’t know what to choose. This can cause the child to not be taught in the best way possible! This is completely normal, especially when first starting out, but there are resources that can help with that! Strike Hope works to provide the financial resources for tutoring, teaching, and even tuition assistance for the extra support the parent may need.

Stress

Oftentimes, parents can feel stress and tiredness with their children constantly around the house, especially if they work from home. Between that and potentially teaching the child him or herself, it can be difficult to take breaks. Balancing work and teaching their child can be stressful if the time isn’t managed effectively.

If the parent doesn’t have any help from family, friends, or even a babysitter this can become too much on that parent’s plate. Again, this is why we provide financial help with tutoring and teaching, as well as advising, so that parents can free up more time to be the best parent they can be.

Finances

Depending on the type of education, while you may not have to pay for commuting or even tuition, the cost for resources do add up. With books, technology, equipment, and more, nontraditional education at home can get pretty expensive for those facing financial hardship.

Luckily, there are certain resources that are free or low cost, such as those located at public libraries or free online sites. However, they can be limited. If the parent has multiple children or the family is on an extremely tight budget, they may have to choose between their children’s resources and important bills. This is why Strike Hope helps families with Chromebooks and even tuition, so that the child can get the education that they deserve.

These are just a few of the challenges that families engaging in a nontraditional education face, but it doesn’t cover all of them. However, don’t let these discourage you. There are resources and options to your avail that can help offset these challenges.

As a community, let’s make sure that the cons don’t outweigh the benefits! Strike Hope is working to decrease the financial challenges related to learning outside of the public school system that low-income families face. We provide help with Chromebooks, tutoring and teaching, resource connections and advising, and tuition assistance! Through your donation, we can help families across the nation! Any amount counts! 3 Unique Benefits of a Nontraditional Education

nontraditional education

The recent pandemic has opened many minds to the idea of nontraditional education. As stated in our previous blog HERE, a nontraditional education is one that is offered in ways other than the traditional classroom setting.

We understand that this can be challenging for some parents or guardians, which is why we’re working to support the financial needs of children who are pursuing an education outside of the public school system (support our cause HERE).

However, many often think about the controversies of a nontraditional education, such as lack of social interaction, increased amount of screen time, etc.

But there are still many unique benefits of a nontraditional education; let’s take a look!

More Specific Goals

Instead of trying to fit children into one kind of curriculum, you’re able to help them explore their unique interests. You can help them understand themselves and set goals. And then, you can tailor the curriculum to accomplish these goals.

Consider including short term goals by asking: “What do you want to learn?” “What are your current likes and dislikes?”

Consider long term goals by asking: “What do you hope to become in the future?” “What are your career plans?”

This also teaches them goal setting and planning, which is an important practice for success.

Individualized Attention

Testing and standardized metrics may not always help students discover their true potential. With the “one size fits all” curriculum and exams, traditional schools cater to the general population rather than each student’s unique personalities

In a nontraditional setting, such as virtual learning and homeschooling, there are fewer students to cater to, allowing for more individualized attention for each student.

Convenience and Comfort

With a nontraditional education, there is no need to leave the comfort and safety of your home, unless you’re in a homeschooling pod, taking field trips, or just switching environments to break the monotony of being home.

The difference here is: you have more control over where you want your child to learn. You don’t have to worry (too much) about the potential dangers when commuting to and from a traditional brick-and-mortar or even being in one because you’re right there with them

You also have more control over your time and schedule. Nontraditional learning schedules can be as flexible as you want them to be, meaning you’re able to switch tasks around when certain events come up. It’s much easier and very beneficial to learn where and when it’s convenient for you.

It’s important to note that we’re not discrediting traditional education. We’re simply highlighting the benefits of a nontraditional education. So, if you’re considering switching to a nontraditional education, keep these benefits in mind!

We’re also here to help with this process! Strike Hope provides Chromebooks, tuition assistance, tutoring and teaching, advising, and more for children engaging in an education outside of the public school system. To support our mission, donate HERE

What is a Nontraditional Education?

A nontraditional education is one that is offered in ways other than a traditional classroom setting. It can take place in different environments, have different (and even looser) schedules, and contain different curriculums. These forms of education are skyrocketing and becoming more widely accepted not just by parents and educators, but also by educational institutions and society.

There are various types of nontraditional education, and it can be hard to determine which one may be right for you and your family. So, we’ve compiled a list that includes the pros and cons of some of the types of nontraditional education:

Homeschooling

Homeschooling, also known as home education, is probably one of the most popular forms of nontraditional education. It’s directed by the parent or guardian from the comfort of their own home (or anywhere else they’d like to teach). Homeschoolers may or may not be required to meet state education standards, depending on where they live, and parents or the family must provide the resources for learning.

  • Pros
    • Easier to explore your child’s interests
    • Extremely flexible
    • Can adapt to changes, such as a pandemic
  • Cons
    • There’s a cost for providing your own resources
    • Your child can feel isolated (unless they’re in a learning/homeschool pod)
    • The adjustment period if you’re transitioning from traditional to nontraditional education

Virtual Schooling

Technology is slowly becoming more important in our everyday lives, and education is just one aspect in which it’s becoming more and more common.

In virtual schooling, the educators tend to be a school, teacher, or instructor and they must meet school standards and requirements. Some resources may be offered by the virtual school, while the family is responsible for the rest.

  • Pros
    • Cost effective
    • More personalized and accessible options
    • Schoolwork can be completed faster
  • Cons
    • Some students may not have consistent access to technology or Internet
    • Too much screen time can negatively impact a child’s health
    • It’s harder to blend subjects together

Unschooling

This type of education is often practiced by homeschoolers and ‘worldschoolers’. It advocates for ‘learner-chosen activities’, meaning that students can choose what and when to learn. They can learn from virtually anything, including books, family and friends, things they find on the Internet, etc. This focuses more on the experimental and organic part of learning.

  • Pros
    • Great flexibility
    • Less stress
    • Freedom of choice
  • Cons
    • Lack of report cards and standardized tests (this may be a pro for some people though!)
    • A lot of decisions fall on the child
    • Lack of socialization

These are just a few of the many types of nontraditional education; there are so many more out there to explore to help you determine what works for you and your family! Nontraditional education is very unique and can be confusing at times, and it can be hard knowing how to help your child succeed.

That’s why we’re here! Strike Hope helps with the financial needs of children exploring an education outside of the public school system, and as you can see from the above examples, money for resources does add up.

And we need your help! Donate to our cause so we can help children across the nation get the education they deserve. DONATE NOW
